Digital TV switch in 2009?
Politicians want to ban the sale of analog TVs soon--and set a firm
date for all-digital broadcasts. Under current law, analog television
would be cut off on Dec. 31, 2006 and analog signals would stop in
2008. Sadly this doesn't really impact the rich as most can
afford a new TV, but for lower income citizens this will come as a
major blow when their TV's wont work and they can't afford to run to
Wal-Mart and buy a new one.
the U.S. Senate's Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is readying legislation expected this year that would require all American televisions to run on digital signals by the end of 2008. That would free up the analog, or 700 MHz, spectrum for other uses such as broadband services and communications for emergency workers.
