Wii Continues to Lead Console Sales in U.S.

With the sales of videogame software in the US growing 36% during December of last year, data from the NPD Group shows that Nintendo's Wii console is the king of the hill with sales of 1.35 million units for the month. Second was Microsoft's Xbox 360 with 1.26 million units sold and 797,600 units moved by Sony's PlayStation 3. The report notes that Sony has seen a dramatic increase the last two months as the price point for the console been lowered and news of rival format HD DVD's struggle is reported.

The Wii finished the year as the top-selling console, with nearly 6.3 million units sold domestically. That compares to 4.6 million units for the Xbox 360 and nearly 2.6 million units for the PS3 for the year, according to NPD data. For the year, "Halo 3" from Microsoft was the best-selling game title with more than 4.8 million units moved in the U.S. "Wii Play" moved more than 4.1 million units for the year while "Call of Duty 4" sold three million units.
