Future Intel Processors about to Change
Infoworld has an article that talks about recent architecture changes on processors in the last few years. Seems to me, that since AMD proved that integrating the memory controller on the processor die improved performance, Intel is ready to make the switch and also take it to the next level by eventually including graphics and other co-processors on a single chip.
More change came with the introduction of Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon 64 processor, which integrated the memory controller with the processor on a single die. This first step towards integration of the processor with other PC components was followed in 2005 with AMD's introduction of dual-core processors, and the 2006 release of the first quad-core chip from Intel.
