Million-core Supercomputer Barrier Broken By Stanford!
Over the years computer manufacturers have increased the number of CPU core counts in modern computers. Stanford Researchers have passed a new mile stone by reaching over 1 million CPU cores in a super computer. In fact they broke 1 million by a large margin with 1,572,864 compute cores or processors. One would ask what do you do with over one million CPU cores? Stanford is using them to simulate fluid dynamics. Their end goal is to be able to reduce the noise of high performance air craft engines. Here is a excerpt from the article.
Researchers at the Center for Turbulence Research set a new record in supercomputing, harnessing a million computing cores to model supersonic jet noise. Work was performed on the newly installed Sequoia IBM Bluegene/Q system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories.
