Cheers LED Ice Cubes Can Track How Much Alcohol You've Been Drinking
Having your own portable breathalyzer is a pretty cool way to monitor how much you've have to drive, but that was so ten years ago! A 23-year-old MIT student named Dhairya Dand came up with a pretty cool invention after an alcohol-induced blackout during a college party, Cheers LED ice cubes! These little 'ice cubes' keep track of the amount of alcohol that is being consumed by the person using them.
As you might have already guessed, you place the Cheers LED ice cubes in a glass and they have been programmed to change colors as drinks are consumed. The device works thanks to software that reads accelerometer motion data along with a timer to calculate sips over time. Based on Dand’s personal alcohol tolerance, he designed the cube to stay green during the first drink, transition to yellow during the second drink and change to red during the third drink to warn Dand that he’s reaching his limit. The prototype device cost around $50 to make and need to be adjusted for different people due to different alcohol tolerances.
After an alcohol induced blackout, I made self-aware glowing ice-cubes that beat to the ambient music. The electronics inside the ice-cubes know how fast and how much you are drinking. The cubes change color from green to orange to finally red as you keep drinking beyond the safety limit. If things get out of control, the cubes send a text to your close friend using your smartphone.
