NZXT Cryo S - Performance & Final Thoughts
Cooling performance for these types of coolers is difficult to measure and even harder replicate testing across different models as it depends heavily on the design of the laptop, placement on the cooler and ambient room temperature. Notebook computers can vent below, to the side, or as in the case with my MacBook Pro, along the base of the screen. All of these need good airflow to cool effectively, but in the end you are using ambient room temperatures so typically you can expect up to a five degree positive impact on temperatures with just about any cooler. So, the basis of your purchasing decision should rest on the available features, design, intended usage, cost and ultimately the reliability/support of the manufacturer.
I tested this on my MacBook Pro to get some metrics and I used Temperature Monitor as the gauge. I maxed out the CPU by converting large media files with Quicktime and made sure the ambient room temp remained at 71°C. As you can see from the chart, cooling performance is not extraordinary but average or slightly above relative to what you can expect from these types of coolers. It provides an extra safeguard against excess heat which can have a cumulative impact on your components over time.
After spending time with the NZXT CRYO S cooler, I found my initial impressions were not misguided. The unit combines a sleek design with rugged construction and quiet, efficient performance. At a retail price of just $50 USD, I feel it's a good value for those needing a cooler but not looking to haul it from place to place as its size and weight could be cumbersome. Other than a somewhat diminutive AC power cord, I don't have a single complaint and have no problem recommending it.
Legit Bottom Line: NZXT has a sound product offering with its CRYO S notebook cooler. Beautifully crafted, attractive features and a price tag you can live with, the CRYO S is a solid choice for those needing some cooling for their notebook or netbook device.
