Extreme On A Budget
The times are a-changin'. In the past for extreme overclocking cooling solutions your options were rather limited. You could pay an arm and a leg to a machine shop to make a one-off pot or turn to the handful of pot makers and wait till they had another batch complete. With Koolance things have been simplified to directing your browser to Koolance.com and swiping(typing in) your credit card. Within a week you could be up and running, easily pushing your processor beyond what is possible with air, water, or simple phase change cooling systems. Koolance's CPU-LN2 is a nickle plated copper pot designed to be used with dry ice and liquid nitrogen for extreme overclocking.
The CPU-LN2 operates on heat exchange with cold substances like dry ice and liquid nitrogen and the nickle plated copper evaporator. For reference, dry ice sublimates at -78.5 Celsius and liquid nitrogen evaporates at -195.7 Celsius. By pouring liquid nitrogen or dry ice and a solvent into the CPU-LN2 the end-user can achieve base temperatures that permit substantial overclocks. I mention a solvent for dry ice as dry ice is a solid and to utilize it effectively dry ice is sublimated in a bath of acetone or ethanol. These chemicals can be purchased at hardware supply stores but be careful, acetone eats most plastics and both are highly flammable.
For today's testing I will be using the Koolance CPU-LN2 on AMD's Phenom II X4 955 with dry ice and liquid nitrogen and on Intel's Core i7 Xeon w3540 with liquid nitrogen. I ran a series of benchmarks that I would normally run while benching like 3DMark 2006 and Super Pi. For those of you interested in dry ice and liquid nitrogen benching the next page has a short guide describing how to perform both safely and effectively.
