The ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 has been a performance leader since the summer. This hasn't changed and the PaLiT HD 4870 X2 continues this trend. At the beginning of this article I asked if this particular card was worth the hassle of dealing with the three slot design. I can say with only one reservation that yes, the Revolution 700 is indeed a better option than the reference design. The only downside I can see with this card is in CrossFire situations. Some boards, especially a large portion of Intel X58 motherboards, will lose nearly all their PCI and PCIe slots when using two Revolution 700 Deluxe's in CrossFire.
That being said, as a single-card video solution, the PaLiT Revolution 700 Deluxe is vastly superior to the reference design used on the Radeon HD 4870 X2 when it comes to thermal performance. Currently, nearly all the other ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 cards sold are reference designs so the Revolution 700 Deluxe won't have much in the way of competition. If you are looking for a single card with no thoughts of CrossFire, the Revolution 700 Deluxe is a great option.
From what I can gather, PaLiT warranties their cards for two years, which is about average for companies that don't include lifetime warranties. The actual retail package doesn't feature a whole lot of extra connectors but those are made useless due to the card itself featuring all the connectors. So, in the end, I figure PaLiT has saved themselves some money with the packaging and possibly the PCB and invested it into a superb cooling solution. For that PaLiT deserves the editors choice award for taking a risk and coming out with a product that no other company can come close to competing with!
Legit Bottom Line: The best of the best just got better. PaLiT re-engineered the HD 4870 X2 and fixed its major flaw.
