The AMD Athlon X2 4850e Processor

The processor we will be using today for testing is brand new and is the latest edition to the AMD line of 45-watt dual-core desktop CPUs (AMD Athlon X2 BE-2300, BE-2350 and BE-2400). At 2.5GHz, it’s quite an able CPU for such a low power threshold and should prove a good choice for those who need to build a home theater PC or for those who want a quiet and efficient, yet capable desktop. AMD informed LR to expect availability shortly after launch with price of $89 U.S., which means it is priced right as the AMD BE-2400 is selling today for $109.99 plus shipping.

AMD 4850e Processor

You might be wondering why the AMD Athlon X2 4850e has a model number that is different than the other 45-watt dual-cores. This is a good question and AMD claims it was done after they listened to customer feedback. AMD feels the new model number convention blends in better with the model numbers of the standard line of X2 processors, conveying relative performance while still designating the new processor as a special energy-efficient variant. AMD does not plan at this time to retroactively change the model numbers of the existing “BE” 45-watt dual-core processors.
