Power Consumption

For testing power consumption, we took our test system and plugged it into a Kill-A-Watt power meter. For idle numbers, we allowed the system to idle on the desktop for 15 minutes and took the reading. For load numbers we measured the peak wattage used by the system while running the OpenGL benchmark FurMark 1.9.1 at 640x480 resolution. We also ran the game HAWX 2 and looped the benchmark three times and recorded the highest Wattage seen on the meter.

Power Consumption Results: The EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2Win came in third place in the vast majority of the performance benchmarks, so it should be a big shocker to see that it consumes the third most power of the 12 cards that we have tested.  The top three video cards are dual-GPU solutions on a single PCB, so we expected them to use more power than any of the single GPU cards. Please keep in mind the power numbers above are measured at the wall on our Intel Core i7-3960X test system that uses the ASUS P9X79 Deluxe motherboard with 16GB of memory and the Intel RTS2011LC water cooler! At idle the EVGA Geforce GTX 560 Ti 2Win used 128W and then under full load in Furmark 1.9.1 we got it to peak at 509 Watts. Now we know what EVGA suggested a 700 Watt power supply with 50 Amps on the +12V rail as if the CPU was overclocked at all and under a full load the system would easily be over 600 Watts. The Corsair HX850 power supply that we use for testing is 80 Plus silver certified and has a single +12V rail that can handle up to 70 Amps.
