HD Tach v3.0.4.0

HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.

Western Digital Scorpio Black 1TB:

HD Tach Benchmark Results

Benchmark Results: The WD Scorpio Blue 1TB had an average read speed of 93.3MB/s and an average write speed of 70.6MB/s!  The WD Scorpio Blue 1TB also had a burst speed of 215.2MB/s and a random access time of 16.6ms. Not bad for a drive that boasts its storage capacity more than anything else!

Comparison Performance Chart:

HD Tach Benchmark Results

Benchmark Results: Compared to a 5400RPM hard drive like the Hitachi K5K500 320GB the WD Scorpio Blue performs much better, but it was slightly slower than the WD Scorpio Black 750GB drive. This was expected as the WD Scorpio Black 750GB drive is designed for performance and has a faster 7200RPM spindle speed.
