Power Consumption

For testing power consumption, we took our test system and plugged it into a Kill-A-Watt power meter. For idle numbers, we allowed the system to idle on the desktop for 15 minutes and took the reading. For load numbers we measured the peak wattage used by the system while running the OpenGL benchmark FurMark 1.8.2 at 1280x1024 resolution.

Power Consumption Results: The ASUS GeForce GTX 590 really isn't that much of a power hog as we saw our test system with that card installed pull 445W of power from the wall. Not bad for a complete system and well below the suggested 700W power supply suggestion from NVIDIA.

Just for fun we ran both the GeForce GTX 590, 580 and 570 with 3DMark Vantage to see how the cards would fare in an application that shouldn't be throttled on an NVIDIA graphics card.  The GeForce GTX 590 peaked at 465 Watts in game test 1, which is exactly 20 Watts more than the peak number observed in Furmark.
