Benchmarking on Lost Planet 2

Lost Planet 2 Benchmark Launcher

The Lost Planet 2 benchmark can be run in either DX9 or DX11 modes and has 2 different tests that can be run: Benchmark A and BenchmarkB. They are very different and serve different purposes.

Lost Planet 2 Benchmark

Benchmark A is a small section of actual gameplay being shown over the course of different sections of the full game. This test is not conducive of a good GPU benchmark because of its random nature and is more suited as a demonstration of what gameplay in Lost Planet 2 will look like in the full game. This test can also be used to experience gameplay with 3D Vision, 3D Vision Surround and NVIDIA Surround technologies, which are fully supported for this benchmark and the full release of the game.

Benchmark B is designed to be a deterministic and effective GPU benchmarking tool featuring DirectX 11 elements. This benchmark is the tool that should be used for testing performance of competing DirectX 11‐capable GPUs

We ran both benchmark types on our test system and found test B to be a few frames per second lower, so we picked this benchmark since it appeared to be the toughest on the video cards.

We then set the image quality settings to high and got right to benchmarking! We tested the ATI Radeon HD 5850 and the MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB video cards with AA turned off in both DX9 and DX11 modes and then in DX11 with both cards AA settings cranked up to the max.  This would be CSAA 32X on the GeForce GTX460 and MSAA 8X on the Radeon HD 5850.

The results were rather shocking as the reference ATI Radeon HD 5850 performed 25% better than the overclocked MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB video card at a resolution of 1920x1200 when running DirectX 9. Once DirectX 11 was enabled the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 was able to run the Lost Planet 2 benchmark  nearly 10%  better than the ATI Radeon HD 5850. This is a rather significant come back and as you can see the NVIDIA powered MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB video card does well on DX11 game titles.

Just for fun we left all the settings on high and increased the AA settings as high as they would go on each respective card. This caused the cards to significantly slow down, but the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 was still able to run faster than the ATI Radeon HD 5850 video card.

Final Thoughts and Conclusions:

When it comes to DirectX 11 performance the MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB video card proved to be faster than the ATI Radeon HD 5850 in Lost Planet 2.  It also wins on the price front as the MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB video card runs $259.06 shipped, which is nearly $31 less than the MSI Radeon HD 5850 video card as it runs $289.99 shipped.  It looks like ATI needs to get their fall 'refresh' out the door as NVIDIA has finally passed ATI up when it comes to DX11 performance in the $200-$300 price range. Not a place that you want to be behind at as many gamers are willing to buy cards in this price range.
