Overclocking the XFX Radeon HD 5830

XFX Radeon HD 5830 Overclocking

The XFX Radeon HD 5830 starts out with the reference clock speeds of 800MHz for the core and 1000MHz on the GDDR5 memory.  I started out using the ATI Overdrive that is bundled with the drivers from ATI.  I was easily able to max out the core clock slider in ATI's Overdrive. In order to see how far I could push the XFX Radeon HD 5830 I had to find an alternate means of overclocking. In comes MSI's Afterburner software. After enabling the Unofficial overclocking in the config file I was able to go above and beyond the 900MHz limit.

After checking stability the final overclock we were able to achieve was an impressive 975MHz on the core clock and 1213MHz on the Memory! That is ~22% improvement over the factory speeds!

With out any benchmarks to back it up it is only numbers. Running 3DMark Vantage at the new speeds we saw a 1900 point boost or 13.7% jump in the overall score and an impressive boost in the GPU score of nearly 2300 points or 18%

When running the DirectX 11 game Aliens Vs. Predator performance scaled nearly perfect with our overclocked XFX Radeon HD 5830. At both resolutions we saw an improvement of ~22% in the average frames per second which matches the gains we saw in the clock speeds!
