GeForce GTX 470 Overclocking

Overclocking the ASUS GeForce GTX 470 graphics card with Smart Doctor was fairly easy, but we did bump into a few issues along the way though that need to be pointed out.

The first thing is that you are rather limited by clock frequencies as the Vcore setting in SmartDoctor only goes up to 707MHz.  It would have been nice to see this increased to at least 1000MHz as we know these cards have plenty of overclocking room in them if with the proper cooling.

When we maxed out the overclocks and went to enable them we were confronted with this pop-up stating that the GPU clock was successful, but the memory overclock failed. In fact any memory overclock that we tried failed. We contacted ASUS about this and they had this to say:

"You can currently only adjust Vcore and Core Clock with Smart Doctor with the current build. We should shortly have an updated build shortly that will enable the Memory Clock to be adjusted as well increases the Core Clock speeds maximum set frequency." - ASUS PR

This is a temporary setback, but for those that really want to overclock these cards you can use numerous other utilities that are available online for free.

Running 3DMark Vantage with the Extreme preset we got a score of X7335.  The score went up X8343 3DMarks when overclocked with SmartDoctor, which was an improvement of 13.7%.

When ASUS updates SmartDoctor to allow memory overclocking the GeForce GTX 470 should overclock much better! Even still, our 14% overclock is impressive for just bumping up the GPU core 100MHz or 16%. Notice that we didn't have to increase the GPU voltage at all to overclock the card to the highest core clock available for this utility! This card has plenty of more overclocking space left in it!
