Power Consumption

For testing power consumption, we took our test system and plugged it into a Kill-A-Watt power meter. For idle numbers, we allowed the system to idle on the desktop for 15 minutes and took the reading. For load numbers we measured the peak wattage used by the system while running the OpenGL benchmark FurMark 1.7.0 at 1920x1200 resolution.

Total System Power Consumption Results

Power Consumption Results: The Radeon HD 5830 used just slightly more power than the Radeon HD 5850, but remember no two cards are exactly identical as power leakage from the ASIC is different on every card. Nearly all of the Radeon HD 5700 and 5800 series cards idle right around 160 Watts with the load power consumption being the number to keep an eye on.
