Temperature Testing
Since video card temperatures and the heat generated by next-generation cards have become an area of concern among enthusiasts and gamers, we want to take a closer look at how the Radeon HD 5450 series does at idle and under a full load.
ATI Radeon HD 5450 512MB Idle Temperature:
At idle the ATI Radeon HD 5450 512MB video card with the reference
designed passive cooler had a decent
idle temperature of 33C. As you can see from the screen shot above, the
idle state of the ATI Radeon HD 5450 had an idle core clock
frequency of just 157 MHz, but the memory was at 740.6 MHz. The frequency drop is to help conserve
power and lower
temperatures. The memory clock frequency seems a bit high if you ask us, but this is a reference card and retail cards might differ with respect to the memory clock idle states.
ATI Radeon HD 5450 Load Temperature:
We fired up FurMark 1.8.0 and ran the stability test at 640x480 which was
enough to put the GPU at 100% load in order to get the highest load
temperature possible. This application also charted the temperature
results so you can see how the temperature rises and levels off, which
is very nice. The ATI Radeon HD 5450 512MB graphics card topped out at 52C, but took 15 minutes to reach this temperature. Not bad temperature numbers considering this card is passive. We turned off the rendering at the 15 minute mark, which is why the temperature dropped slightly at the end of the test. The FurMark 1.8.0 application still has 3D graphics being rendered with this screen open and is the reason the card didn't cool down right away. This application just came out today, but we like to use the latest and greatest tests when possible and so we gave it a shot.
