OCZ USB 3.0 and SAS Drives
In addition to internal storage solutions, OCZ also demonstrated the groundbreaking performance of the highly anticipated USB 3.0 interface with an ultra-slim portable SSD. Geared toward the early-adopting enthusiast, the OCZ USB 3.0 SSD sets the bar early for high-performance storage devices.
By using the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface the OCZ 3.0 portable SSD is
capable of running speed of up to 5Gbps. This is ten times faster than
USB 2.0 and will significantly decrease the wait time when moving files from the system to the portable SSD.
Here is a nice shot of the drive in action. It's very small and handy, and thanks to the USB 3.0 specs, it doesn't need external power source. The OCZ USB 3.0 portable has two LED activity lights on it. One of the activity lights is for power and the other light is for activity.
OCZ tested out their SuperSpeed USB 3.0 portable SSD on the test system seen above.
The scores of the USB 3.0 portable SSD were impressive as the drive reached 188MB/s read and 130MB/s in the write test by using CrystalDiskMark 2.2.
Here is a quick video going over the OCZ USB 3.0 Portable SSD that you can check out if you like.
OCZ has a proven track record in the design and manufacture of 2.5 inch solid state drives and is in a unique position to be able to do the same with Serial-attached SCSI (SAS) SSDs in the enterprise space. It just happens that OCZ also just announced their 1st generation SAS SSD, so they appear to be making a move into the enterprise storage space here in 2010.
SSD's on SAS is good news for businesses looking to speed up their I/O limited environments. Virtual Machine farms would get a huge boost when using local storage and may even cause some to switch away from the extremely expensive SAN's they are using today.
