Power Consumption

Since power consumption is a big deal these days, we ran some simple power consumption tests on our test beds. To measure idle usage, we ran the system at idle for one hour on the desktop with no screen saver and took the measurement. For load measurements, Cinebench R10 was run on all cores to make sure each and every processor was at 100% load. The Blu-Ray playback numbers were taken while playing the movie Star Trek from the Blu-Ray. All numbers were taken with both notebooks in 'high performance' battery mode, so these are the highest numbers you are likely to see.

Power Consumption Results

Results: The ASUS K42F notebook with the Intel Core i5 540 processor had some insane idle power consumption numbers as you can see from the chart above. The ASUS K42F had an idle power consumption of just 15 Watts, which was 8W less than the HP DV4-1555dx entertainment notebook. During Blu-ray playback the ASUS K42F again used less power, but during full CPU load the Core i5 540 processor used slightly more power. At full load the Intel Core i5 540M does use more power, but this is expected as the CPU runs at over 3GHz thanks to Turbo boost technology.
