Patriot Box Office – Setting Up

Patriot Box Office

Besides the main unit, the Patriot Box Office comes with a full-sized Remote Control, 2 “AAA” Batteries, Composite AV Cable, a USB Cable, an AC Adaptor, 4 hard drive screws, User CD (with Transcode Server v1.30 Utility Software), and a Quick Start Guide. Incredibly, Patriot even included an HDMI (1.3) cable.

At 5.7” (L) x 6.6” (W) x 5.3” (H), the Box Office isn’t that large and can be placed almost anywhere in the house.  On the front of the unit there is one USB Connector, the IR Receiver, USB activity light, HDD indicator, LAN/ACC Indicator, and the Power/Standby Indicator.

On the back, you can see the Composite Output ports, the Optical Output, HDMI Output, USB “mini” port, the second USB port, LAN Connector, and the DC Jack.  The layout is simple but effective, designed to be left alone.

The remote has 47 total buttons on its face.  Besides the normal type of remote buttons, this layout includes 12 “specialty” buttons on the bottom.  This remote is not only full of functionality; it actually fits in adult’s palm!  When we looked at the Western Digital WDTV Live, the remote seemed best suited for a child’s hands.

It took less than 5 minutes out of the box for us to be hooked up to our A/V system.  We hooked the Box Office up via the included HDMI cable and flipped on the power switch in the back (by the way, it is a nice addition to include a “hard” power switch with these types of units).

Right about now, we have to point out that both the printed manual and the manual that comes on the included CD are pretty rough around the edges, shall we say.  Obviously, someone has translated much of the text in both documents and presented it to us.  For me, it was a disappointment to read statements such as: “Only the HDMI cable is able to supported [sic] up to the resolution of 1080p” or, “Set the IP of media player if applicable. If don’t have wired LAN connection please select CANCEL”.

I’m really not trying to be the grammar police or anything, and I realize most companies (and technical reviewers) have their moments, but there were way too many errors and grammatical train wrecks for my taste.
