Patriot’s Box Office - A New Player in the Game

Over the past year, we have really seen a boom in home media appliances. These devices make it easier for you to share the multimedia that is on your computer with the rest of your house or office. In the past, the best devices have been those that can access the internet, a local drive, or a network attached storage device easily so that you can play or view your content in any room of your home. Most enthusiasts choose to build their own do-it-yourself devices or Home Theater Personal Computers (HTPC). Depending on your choice of Motherboard, RAM, video card and case, HTPCs can cost anywhere from $300 to more than $1000. Multimedia and storage companies have seen a niche that they can fill by providing the public with devices that can perform the basic functions of a Home Theater PC for less than $150.

Last week, Patriot introduced the $129 ($99 After Rebate) Box Office HD Media Server, a brand new device to compete in this emerging market. The Box Office is designed to be an all-in-one solution for high definition media play back, file transfer, and internet video streaming.

Of course we have seen Patriot memory products for a while here at Legit Reviews, so we were pretty excited to hear that Patriot was introducing a media player that supports our favorite audio and video formats. The Patriot Box Office has support for USB storage devices with three USB ports, as well as room for an onboard 2.5” SSD or HDD. The Box Office outputs it’s HD video via its HDMI or Composite outputs. With the Box Office’s full-sized remote control, support for UPnP, Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound, it looks like Patriot has really put together a nice looking box.
