Final Thoughts and Conclusions

For the most part, the ADATA XPG Spectrix D40 DDR4 memory kit performed as we expected. While it wasn’t always the best performer, the difference between its rated speed and a similar DDR4 kit from HyperX was consistantly less than 1%. The speed and timings of the memory didn’t show a huge gain in most of the tests, until it was overclocked which is where we started to see better scores.

Overclocking the Spectrix D40 memory kit from it’s rated speed of 3000MHz, was very easy, and overclocked well. Simply by raising the DDR4 memory, increasing the voltage and losening the timings, we were able to increase the memory from 3000MHz to 3466MHz, a 15% overclock.

The key feature of the Spectrix D40 that sets itself apart from a large number of memory kits is the design of the heatsink, along with the integrated RGB LED strip. The XPG RGB Sync App works with ASUS Aura Sync to synch the LED’s to other RGB features on the motherboard. The RGB LEDs feature ten built-in profiles that can take advantage of the individually addressable LEDs on the memory.

The Spectrix D40 16GB (8GB x 2) memory kit is currently available in four different speeds, ranging from 2400MHz to 3200MHz, while ADATA shows that they have plans for memory kits up to 4000MHz. The specific 16GB memory kit we tested is available online for $186.99 shipped, which places it about in the middle of the cost for 16GB DDR4 3000MHz memory kits. Consider the RGB function, and it becomes one of the lower priced models. For that price, you are looking at some well designed and thought out memory kits that include a lifetime warranty.

Legit Bottom Line: The ADATA XPG Spectrix D40 offers great overclocking ability, on par speed performance, and a great RGB LED strip that works with ASUS AURA on your motherboard to provide endless customization options for the color of your system.
