OnTop TurboJet Whisper 4GB USB Flash Drive Review

Usage, Final Thoughts & Conclusions

While the OnTop TurboJet Whisper drive is meant as portable storage device that can be fashionable as well as functional, I’m not sure I’d trust the thin chain to hold up under any type of abuse. Someone could snap it off pretty easy if they grabbed and pulled. I’d be especially wary if I had any type of sensitive data stored on there.

The chain itself is not adjustable and simply attaches on with a spring loaded lobster claw type clip. Thankfully, it wouldn’t fit over my fat head so I was able to opt out of having my picture taken while modeling it. It really is more of a feminine design (my wife thinks it’s “cute”).

Having the logo displayed prominently on the front detracts from the aesthetic appeal in my opinion. I recommend removing the chain before inserting the drive into a PC because it tends to get in the way and may hang down in areas that you might prefer it not linger such as an optical drive tray.

Using the drive can be tricky believe it or not. You must make sure the drive is oriented in the right direction because it will fit into the USB port slot either way – but only one way works. No damage should result from incorrect insertion but it’s best to make sure you do it right just in case. The gold contacts should be facing the black tab that sits inside of female USB slots to operate correctly.

Overall, as you can tell from the benchmarks, the performance is mediocre and the design itself will not appeal to all users. They do offer a fairly large variety of designs so you might check the others out if this one doesn’t float your boat. The construction of the drive seems solid and the chain should be strong enough for casual use but keep in mind that the chain is optional and you can always utilize a chain of your choosing. To purchase one, you need to order through OnTop’s site as they aren’t currently available through retailers.

Legit Bottom Line: The OnTop TurboJet Whisper drive is not quite the speed demon that the name might suggest and for the male population, this particular design may not be the best choice. However, if the design does appeal to you and you’d like to covertly carry data on a device disguised as jewelry, the performance should be adequate enough to meet your needs.
