OnTop TurboJet Whisper 4GB USB Flash Drive Review

Drive Capacity & Performance

The OnTop TurboJet Whisper is sold as a 4GB drive but like all flash drives, the actual capacity falls slightly below the specified number. Below you can see it’s about 300MB short of a full 4GB which is normal and per their site, they do state that a portion of the drive is dedicated to “formatting and other functions”.

ATTO is one of the oldest drive benchmarks still being used today. ATTO measures transfers across a specific volume length. It measures raw transfer rates for both reads and writes and places the data into graphs that can be very easily interpreted. The test was run with the default runs of 0.5kb through 8192kb transfer sizes with the total length being 256mb.

Benchmark Results: Overall, reads are pretty good hitting nearly 25MB/s for the larger file sizes. Writes look good at the large file sizes as well but you can see writes do not scale the same way as the reads with the smaller file sizes and will bring down the overall average write speed.

CrystalDiskMark is a small benchmark utility for drives and enables rapid measurement of sequential and random read/write speeds. This newest version is still in beta.

Benchmark Results: Writes really performed poorly in this benchmark and were incredibly slow on average for 4k files. Reads were good on for sequential and 512k but the 4k results were again rather low.

HD Tune Pro 4.01 is an extended version of HD Tune which includes many new features such as write benchmark, secure erasing, AAM setting, folder usage view, disk monitor, command line parameters and file benchmark.

Benchmark Results: The reads had an overall strong showing here again but the writes lagged pretty far behind. I had large variations in the 8192 writes upon multiple runs of the benchmark. This particular one represented about where it fell on average. At this point, I’m not seeing the “turbo” or “jet” as it is named.
