Test System

My test system consisted of the following components fully installed in a case and used as my main system for everyday use.

Test System:

Lian-Li case

Abit AV8 Ver. 1.1 w/latest bios

AMD A64 S939 3200

ATI 9800Pro 128, modded to 9800XT

Western Digital SATA 80 Gig HD

Lite-On DVD & DVDRW

Antec True 480 PSU

CPU & GPU water cooled

Benchmarks used:

SiS Sandra 2005

PC Mark 04

3D Mark 01 SE

Everest ver. 1.52.195

Memtest86

Testing Procedure:

All tests were conducted with a fresh install of Windows XP Home SP1 with all current updates and Direct X 9c. All the tests were completed within Windows except for Memtest86 which was completed by booting into DOS. Each set of benches were completed only after the memory passed 4 loops of Memtest86 without any errors to ensure the system was stable.

I conducted all benchmark test at several different FSB settings. First I set the system at default settings with the tightest timings I go get to run stable, that ended up being 2,2,2,5.

200fsb

Next was the memory default speed and timings of 2.5,3,3,7 at a FSB of 250.

I then went for the highest overclock I could get with the CPU multiplier left at the default setting of 10 and the memory at default timings and voltage. My CPU maxed out at a FSB of 260.

Next I dropped the CPU multiplier down to 9 to see how far I could take the ram at default timings. I ended up getting to a FSB of 270 at default timings and a voltage of 2.8 for the ram. All in all, I’d say that was pretty good.

270FSB-9-28

The ram passed Memtest86 at a FSB of 275 with a voltage of 2.8, but during the last bench (3D Mark 01) the test kept failing. I tried lowering the multipier down to 8 with 1.75 volts, but nothing helped. I could have used more voltage, but my mother board is maxed out at 2.8. So that’s where the test ended, still pretty impressive I’d say.
