Nox Specialist – Out of the Box and On the Ear

Nox Specialist in Case

Out of the box I was kind of shocked to see just how small these headsets were. Our previous computer gaming headsets of choice were the Tritton AX720s and the Plantronics DSP 500. Both pumped full digital audio to your ears with large drivers. The Nox Specialist have a much smaller footprint and are lighter as well. The Specialist only weigh 1/3 of a pound which I was hoping wouldnt translate into lack of volume. The foam around the ears and head are very soft and have a great feel when you put them on your head. Each ear cup has a breathable fabric that surrounds lightweight foam that provides surprising comfort when you put the headsets on. There are two 26mm Mylar drivers in each ear that are designed to provide rich sound and a clear audio stage.

Besides the headsets, Nox includes a carrying case, 3.5-mm detachable cable, PC Splitter (Y-Adapter), manual and warranty card. The Y-Adapter is added to the end of the Specialist plug to allow you to plug into your computers microphone input and headphone output, respectively. This is a pretty good bundle for the money. Remember, the Specialist are designed to work straight off with your mobile phone, personal media player, and your PC. This functionality can be expanded when using the Nox Negotiator Gaming Adaptor that lets you connect your Specialist (or any other stereo headphone) directly to the Microsoft XBOX 360 or Sony PlayStation 3 controller.

Taking a closer look at the microphone boom on the Specialist, we see that it is flexible unlike the Triton and Turtle Beach headsets so you can actually flex the boom out of your way if you’re talking to somebody. On the Tritton it was unfortunately too easy to just disconnect the headset by mistake all together. Below is a picture where you can see how mammoth the Tritton AX720 dwarfs the Nox Specialist.

The Plantronics DSP 500 , while having a rigid mic boom, makes it easy to move the mic out of the way. The Nox Specialist microphone is not only flexible, it can be retracted when you dont need it. This feature alone sets itself apart from most other headsets on the market. You can extend the microphone when you need it and that you can retract when you don’t. This retraction procedure is easy with no fuss providing a stealth-like look when you dont want to advertise the fact that you are communicating with anyone.

On the other side of the headset is a large volume control knob that gives you easy control of the content your are listening to. The dial cant be easier to use when you want to adjust the volume on your computer, your mobile phone, or personal media player.

The Specialist has an over-the-head and are able to fold up for compact and secure packing. The 4 -foot cord has an USB-micro end that you can disconnect so that things dont get tangled in your carry case or bag. The Nox Specialist are available in Black, Green, Red, and Blue so that you can match it up with your couture or mood.
