TSMC To Produce Intel Atom Processors in 4Q09 at the Earliest
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is expected to enter production of Atom-core system-on-chip (SoC) solutions in the fourth quarter of 2009 at the earliest, according to industry sources. IP vendor ARM has said that its long-term collaboration with TSMC should not be affected by the foundry’s new partnership with rival Intel. Intel and TSMC on Tuesday announced a strategic partnership for the US chipmaker’s Atom SoCs, but details concerning the partnership, such as production schedule, were not revealed.
Tudor Brown, president of the UK-based IP vendor, told Digitimes in a phone interview that it came as no surprise that Intel chose to tie up with TSMC. Since lowering the manufacturing cost has become a major issue with semiconductor suppliers to tackle the current economic environment, Intel has to look for a more cost-competitive manufacturing partner, he said.
