SXSW: Mozilla Not Planning New Firefox iOS Browser App

By

It does not appear that Apple fans will be getting a Firefox Browser app for iOS, according to Mozilla’s Jay Sullivan. Mozilla pulled Mozilla Firefox Home from Apple’s App Store in September 2012 when the company became upset with Apples view of third-party browsers. Mozilla’s biggest problem lies in the inability to carry over its sophisticated rendering and javascript engines to iOS, CNET reported. “Essentially, the organization doesn’t feel like it can build the browser it wants to for Apple’s platform,” Sullivan told CNET, which moderated Saturday’s panel. Is this the right move for Mozilla? They have less than 1% of the mobile browser market, so are they really in a position to play hard ball? Time will tell if the move was right or not, but for now Apple users will not be able to use Firefox. Consumers lose for now, but the war wages on.
