Sun buying MySQL in $1 billion deal

Sun Microsystems is expanding their “Open Source” product line with the purchase of MySQL!

Sun Microsystems said Wednesday that it is buying open-source software maker MySQL of Sweden for about $1 billion in hopes of luring business from the growing array of large companies that rely on such software for their Internet services.

As part of the transaction, Santa Clara-based Sun will pay about $800 million in cash for all MySQL stock and assume financial responsibility for about $200 million in MySQL stock options.
