Square Enix Subscription Service Teased

Square Enix has some cool games to its credit, and the company wants gamers to play them all. This is especially true of the older games that haven’t been re-released just yet. To get players to check out all of its games, Square Enix is looking into some sort of subscription service.

Word of the possible game service came from Square Enix President and CEO Yosuke Matsuda reports Engadget. The studio has a dedicated team inside to port classic NES titles to modern systems. The assumption is that these old titles might go back to when Square and Enix were two different companies.

Square Enix is said to be exploring the possibility of launching a streaming or download subscription service offering its games exclusively.

Matsuda said, “We’re working on [a digital release of its whole library] in a variety of ways. That is a request that we hear often. As far as our major titles go, most of those, we still have variations out that you can play now. The more classic titles that you might have played on NES, we are still working hard to make it so you can play those. We actually have launched a dedicated project internally to port those, so we are working to make them available on a variety of platforms. Certainly down the road, we would like to see that on a subscription or streaming service, so we’re exploring the possibility of creating a dedicated channel for ourselves.”
