Sonic Drive-In Data Breach Could Affect Millions

By

Drive-in burger Sonic has disclosed that they are the latest victim of hackers seeking consumers credit-card accounts after discovering “unusual activity” according to its credit card processor. Sonic, based in Oklahoma City, serves about 3 million customers a day. Most of its 3,500 locations are operated by franchisees, so this could impact millions of people.

Brian Krebs, an independent journalist who investigates breaches, reported yesterday that the breach led to a fire sale on millions of stolen credit- and debit-card accounts. The information was put up for sale on a TOR site called Jokers Stash, Krebs said.

The card numbers are fetching good money as they are fresh and unlikely to have been canceled by card-issuing banks yet. How much are the stolen cards going for? About $25 to $45 per card and you can pay with cryptocurrency to remain anonymous. With all the credit and debit card issues it might be time to start paying cash for some things again!
