SanDisk Announces Massive 1TB SDXC Memory Card
Today, at Photokina 2016, in Cologne, Germany, Western Digital unveiled the worlds first 1TB SDXC card prototype. The Ultra HD market is packed full of users of 4K, 8K video cameras along with virtual reality, video surveillance and 360 video users that are demanding more storage space. Western Digital knows that there is a need for higher capacity memory cards and is pushing the boundaries of technology with a 1TB SDXC memory card prototype by SanDisk! SanDisk announced the 512GB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Memory Card at the same show back in 2014, so it took two years to double the capacity of an SDXC memory card. If that trajectory continues that means we could be looking at 2TB SDXC cards in 2018! SanDisk has consistently led the market in capacity and performance after introducing the worlds first 64MB SD memory card back in the year 2000.
Showcasing the most advanced imaging technologies is truly exciting for us, said Dinesh Bahal, vice president, product management, Content Solutions Business Unit, Western Digital. Sixteen years ago we introduced the first SanDisk 64MB SD card and today we are enabling capacities of 1TB. Over the years our goal has remained the same; continue to innovate and set the pace for the imaging industry. The SanDisk 1TB SD card prototype represents another significant achievement as growth of high-resolution content and capacity-intensive applications such as virtual reality, video surveillance and 360 video, are progressing at astounding rates.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any performance numbers to share nor do we have definitive pricing or availability information to share. Western Digital informed Legit Reviews that they plan on monitoring industry trends and introduce the card in retail accordingly. Pricing would depend on market conditions at the time its released and you can read the official press release here.
