Temperatures on portable drives are important to some as this is a device that is totally enclosed and then you’ll be picking it up to take it with you shortly after using it.
Temperatures on the SanDisk Extreme 1TB portable drive were found to be around 46C at idle and spiked up to 54C when we wrote about 30GB of data to the drive. This test was done in our air conditioned office, so the test drive was laying flat on the test bench next to the Dell XPS 13 laptop that was used to benchmark the drive.
The drive feels warm at idle and during use, but we were never worried about being burnt by it as it was never what we would call ‘hot’.
