ProMOS to speed up transition to 70nm

By

ProMOS Technologies is said to have sped up the transition to 70nm at its second 12-inch fab (Fab 3) a month ahead of schedule, a move that some industry players interpret as an attempt to grab more market share while Samsung Electronics tweaks its production mix following the recent power outage incident.

ProMOS rival Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC), which had already raised its capital expenditure (capex) partially due to its 70nm progress, is expected to have yields at 70nm reaching 85% in the third quarter, the sources projected. Some industry players have speculated that ProMOS’ transition to 70nm is not only driven by good yields, but is also an attempt to grab more market share while Samsung is facing NAND flash production issues caused by the recent power outage incident.
