How The NZXT Bunker Works

The NZXT Bunker comes with the door closed and that means the Bunker is in a locked state. To install the Bunker you just need to slide it into an open 5.25″ drive bay and secure it to the PC case rail system. You then need to install the USB cable to a motherboard USB header. The USB cable is 28″ in length, which should be enough for most cases in order for the device to work. If you wanted to route it down the back of the case and then back up to the USB headers in order to hide the wire then you might find this cable a bit too short, especially if you are using a full tower ATX or E-ATX chassis.

In a locked state the four USB 2.0 ports are about 2-inches away from the outside of the housing, which gives the device plenty of room to lock up the ends of the USB cables. If you wanted to lock up USB Flash drives you could, but they need to be very small. The internal space here is about 1.6-inches, so only the smallest of USB 2.0 Flash drives could be secured.

The NZXT Bunker uses a slide lever with a spring as the mechanical system that slides forward the USB ports when you unlock and open the door. This way you don’t have to reach inside in order to unplug the cables. If you notice the slide arm has a bit of an “L” shape to it and this is so the door is kept open when unlocked.

With the NZXT Bunker open you can see how the four USB 2.0 ports are not at the front of the enclosure. When closing the Bunker one might think you could just close the door and it would lock, but that is not the case. You need to use the key and both hands in order to close and lock your USB devices up. You’ll need to hold the door closed with one hand and then lock it by using the key with the other hand. Not the most flawless system, but it works.
