Nvidia hits handheld market with AP and GPU

By

Nvidia is heading toward the handheld market with its AP (application processor) and handheld GPU (graphics processor unit) technologies, revealed Michael Rayfield, general manager of handheld GPU, Nvidia in an interview with Digitimes. He believes the company’s AP will take the lead in the handheld chips market.

Although Nvidia will not showcase any new handheld technology or products at Computex Taipei 2007, the company plans to upgrade the technology of its handheld product line every nine months, Rayfield noted. Similar to the trend in the PC industry towards combined CPU+GPU cores, Nvidia plans to eventually integrate its GPU plus AP technology into a single solution. The company expects to have excellent performance in the next generation of PMPs (portable multimedia players), PDAs and portable game consoles, Rayfield pointed out.
