LG to Produce SteamVR Headsets
The question often passes, “Is the world ready to make the transition into VR gaming?” Move away from the monitors and place an electronic device on our heads to immerse ourselves in a three dimensional digital world. Ultimately, this is up to the market. Although the VR gaming market seems stagnant (with many of us still transitioning into 4k monitors or still running on 60Hz refresh rate), it’s clear that many companies are still putting the effort into research and development to come out with VR solutions to select games and even some games made solely for VR. Valve has recently announced that they will be working with LG to develop a SteamVR headset.
The LG headset will feature the SteamVR tracking technology that is currently used in the more popular HTC Vive. Perhaps, soon, we’ll begin to see the prices for high end VR headsets drop as more competitors begin to make their way into the market. Headsets can start at around $600 and reach $800 for an HTC Vive system. That’s just the headset. Users will still need a high performing graphics card and CPU and will still be tethered by a cord connecting the headset to a computer but no one will see you trip over your cord if you’re all using a VR headset. Luckily, some are working on technology that will free us from the binds of a computer like the MoVR System by MIT.
The price and release date have yet to be disclosed, but since it’s still a working prototype, we may see more from the LG SteamVR Headset later this year.
