Overclocking & Conclusion

With the benchmarking runs completed, we turned to overclocking this kit. We were not able to get it stable at the 2133MHz multiplier level, however we did manage to stay stable at 1866MHz at 10-10-9-24 1T timings at the default 1.65v voltage.

We then ran through our AIDA64 tests again at these overclocked speeds. We will compare the Kingston overclocked results to the fastest overclocked settings we were able to achieve with previous RAM kits.

The bandwidth test shows the HyperX performing similarly to other kits running at 1866MHz in our bandwidth test. The improved latency of the HyperX translates into faster speeds in the latency kit than the Corsair kits, but falls behind the Ballistix, which remains the fastest kit we have ever tested.

Conclusion:

The Kingston HyperX Genesis gray series 8GB dual channel kit (part number KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) did not disappoint us. Kingston’s HyperX line has always been designed for enthusiasts, and Kingston is a well established memory company that offers a lifetime warranty on its memory. Our kit today came with attractive gray heat spreaders and benchmarked similarly to other 1600MHz kits we have tested before, but was slightly faster because of marginally tighter timings.

When it came to overclocking, the HyperX was able to run at a faster memory divider but at loosened timings. This overclock did result in measurable benchmark improvements in our synthetic AIDA64 tests. Overclocking is always an unpredictable endeavor, so there is no way to guarantee one kit will overclock better.

This kit currently sells for $44.99 from Newegg but has a mail in rebate at the time of writing which brings it down to $39.99 shipped. At this price, with Kingston’s reliability track record and lifetime warranty, we feel this RAM would be a good purchase for any enthusiast rig. Not much to complain about when a $40 products works as advertised, overclocks to the next common memory clock frequency and is backed by a lifetime warranty. You honestly can’t go wrong with this memory kit!
