Looks like Intel is turning the heat up on AMD with the release of the dual-core Xeon processor, which is geared toward servers. This comes months after AMD’s release of their dual-core Opteron processor.

At an event in San Francisco, Intel unveiled its first dual-core Xeon chips, previously known as Paxville, for two- and four-processor servers. The version for two-chip servers is available immediately at 2.8 GHz, said Kirk Skaugen, general manager of Intel’s server platforms group. The dual-core Xeon 2.8 GHz for two-chip servers costs $1,043 in quantities of 1,000 units, compared with $690 for Intel’s 3.8-GHz single-core Xeon processors.
