Intel to push new server platforms in 2Q08

By

Intel plans to shake up its server platforms in the second half of 2008, according to sources at server makers. Current non-x86 Itanium 2 servers are to be replaced by the new Boxboro MC platform, while high-end 1- and 2-way server platforms, Bensley and Garlow, will be replaced by the Tylersburg EP platform.

Intel will continue to adopt the Caneland platform for its 4-way server market while the Tylersburg series will dominate the company’s 1- and 2-way server and workstation markets. In addition, Intel plans to also separate Tylersburg into four different lines codenamed MC, EX, EP and EN to indicate their advantages over different fields. MC indicates Mission Critical, EX indicates Expandable, EP indicates Efficient Performance and EN indicates Entry, noted the sources.
