Intel sets shipment goal for new desktop CPUs
Intel has internally set a shipment goal of one million Lynnfield (Core i5 and i7) CPUs for desktops by the end of 2009, according to industry sources. Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology are expected to each ship 400,000 P55-based motherboards by year-end 2009, indicated the sources. Meanwhile, combined shipments of P55 boards from other motherboard makers including Micro-Star International (MSI), Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) and ASRock may total around 200,000 units, the sources estimated.
Joe, Hsieh, vice president of Asustek’s motherboard business unit product marketing department, pointed out that the company expects to ship 5.5-6 million motherboards in the third quarter, six million units in the fourth, and 22 million units in total in 2009. P55-based motherboards will account for 10% of the annual shipments. Hsieh noted that Asustek’s motherboard ASPs are 10-15% higher than its competitors’ which should help the company maintain a gross margin of around 20%.
