HP Issues Chromebook 11 Charger Recall Over Safety Concerns

By

Google and HP have announced a voluntary safety recall for the original charger that came with the HP Chromebook 11. If you purchased an HP Chromebook 11, from October 2013 through November 2013 please visit the program website http://chromebook.com/hp11charger, and you will be mailed a replacement charger free of charge. You will also receive a prepaid shipping package to return the original charger so it can be disposed of properly. There are an estimated 145,000 recalled chargers that need to be replaced. The model number of the charger is MU15-N1052-A00S, which is stamped on the face of the battery charger that has the outlet pins.

The decision was made to recall the charger after Google received nine user reports that some chargers included with the device were overheating and melting, posing fire and burn hazards. There is one report of a small burn to a consumer and one report of minor property damage to a pillow from an overheating charger.

It looks like it might take a bit to get a replacement though as the companies say you should allow up to 30 days for the replacement charger to arrive after you have requested one. Outside the US, please allow up to 6 weeks. In the interim you may continue using the HP Chromebook 11 with any other certified micro-USB charger, for example one provided with a tablet or smartphone.
