Guinness World Record for Largest Game Collection Set At 10,607 Video Games

The Guinness World Record for largest game collection has been set by Michael Thomasson, a 43-year-old New York father. He earned the record for owning 10,607 games. He got his first video game, Cosmic Avenger, for Christmas at the age of 12 and has been hooked since. Since then, Thomasson has been buying on average two games per day on a strict $3,000-a-year budget. He estimates the collection is worth $700,000 to $800,000 and admits that he hasn’t played every game that he has bought.

“I have games on cartridge, laser disc. I have VHS-based games, cassette-based games,” Thomasson said.

Guinness lists the number of games in Thomasson’s record-breaking collection at 10,607, though the number of games that he owns is now over 11,000 as he found more games since the audit and hasn’t stopped buying.

The previous record holder, Richard Lecce, who was named king of the video games in 2010, owned 8,616 titles when he achieved the feat.

The process to become the new record holder took over a year to complete from start to finish. Thomasson officially contacted Guinness on April 27th, 2012, the count was confirmed on Dec. 3rd, 2012, Guinness made it official on July 11, 2013, and he received his certificate in the mail on August 5th, 2013.
