Gigabyte AORUS PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD Brings 5000 MB/s Speeds To PC Users

The Gigabyte AORUS PCIe Gen4 M.2 SSD being shown of at Computex 2019 is beautiful. This drive features the Phison PS5016-E16 controller, which just happens to be the first in the World that supports the PCI Express 4.0 x4 interface. This 8 channel controller features 32 CEs and supports the NVMe 1.3 protocol. Gigabyte also went with the latest 96-layer 3D TLC NAND Flash (BiCS4) from Toshiba for this drive.

Performance of the AORUS NVMe Gen4 M.2 SSD

The end result are 1TB and 2TB models that are both rated with sequential read speeds of up to 5000 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 4400 MB/s. Random 4K read/write performance is said to be up to 750k/700k IOPs.

What really makes it look great though is the fact that its fully clad in a copper heat spreader. Gigabyte strategically cut 27 fins into the heat spreader to increase the surface area for better cooling and to optimize for air flow. This drive consumes on average 6.6 Watts of power during active use (write) and idles at 21.1 mW, so it does use a fair bit of power. Gigabyte is seeing a 14% improvement in temperature with the heat spreader on the AORUS PCIe Gen4 SSD.

A 1TB model was shown at Computex 2019 and was capable of reaching sequential read speeds of up to 5000 MB/s read and 4,200 MB/s write on CrystalDiskMark v6.0.1.
