The Ford S-MAX was introduced in 2006 for the European market and it has done pretty well in sales. The Ford S-Max has never made headlines over the past nine years for having breakthrough safety features, but that all changed yesterday when Ford announced Intelligent Speed Limiter technology is coming to the all-new Ford S-MAX. The Ford Intelligent Speed Limiter technology uses windshield mounted camera to scan traffic signs along the road and then a computer makes adjusts the throttle to help drivers stay within legal speed limits and avoid fines.

Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement, said Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe. Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.

The speed limiting technology by Ford is being rolled out in Europe, but that could be just the start. Could this technology eventually be making its way to the United States and possibly forcing us to change the way that we drive? Speeding is illegal, but there are some situations where you need to pass someone or get away from a crazy ex-lover that wants to stuff you into the boot of their car after chopping you up into little pieces with a hatchet. Ford luckily gives you a button called ‘LIM’ on the steering wheel that allows you to enable or disable the Intelligent Speed Limiter. Once it is activated you can also temporarily over-ride the system when it is activating by flooring the vehicle!

You can watch a demo of the technology in the YouTube video below.
