Elpida COO predicts DRAM shortage in 2H 2007

By

Elpida is citing troubles moving to 70nm process, increased demand, increased sales, increased average PC memory capacity and more to predict a strong DRAM shortage later this year. The COO also mentioned the increase DRAM demand in the mobile market to add to the shortage. However, the main indicator is that demand is expected to rise by up to 80%, but Elpida production is only expected to increase by 35-40%. So those planning a PC build for later this year, take note that this means RAM prices will start to rise!

Elpida Memory’s chief operating office (COO) Shuichi Otsuka said that the DRAM market will see a serious shortage in the second half of 2007, as demand will grow much faster than supply. He noted that not all DRAM makers are seeing smooth migration to 70nm processes, as 8-inch fabs are not suitable for 70nm production, which will greatly limit growth in DRAM supply.
