DRAM production at 70nm – Ramping up by year end

By

Taiwan’s DRAM makers have all scheduled their migration to 70nm production in 2007, with ProMOS and PSC having taken the lead, having started production of DRAM on 70nm around the middle of the year. Nanya and Inotera, which is a joint venture between Qimonda and Nanya, should begin producing 70nm DRAM by the end of the year.

Nanya stated that although trench may lag stack on 70nm production, the gross die growth will be greater for trench than that for stack, with the chipmaker saying its gross die growth will reach 40% during its migration to 70nm. Nanya also downplays any problems that trench technology may have on 70nm, saying that makers using both trench and stack technologies will face the same challenges migrating to 70nm, including issues with scanners (lithography equipment) and high-k materials. The company added that its migration to 90nm took two years and the migration to 70nm is also expected to take two years. However, the company added that the next migration to 58nm and 48nm will take 2.5 years on average
