Crytek Sues Star Citizen Dev for Breach of Contract and Infringement

Crytek is the company most famous for Crysis, but it has a booming business for licensing its game engine called the CryEngine. Crytek has filed a lawsuit against game developer Cloud Imperium Games, the developer of a game called Star Citizen. The suit alleges that Cloud Imperium Games didnt make good on its promises for using the CryEngine.

The suit was filed on December 12 and alleges that Crytek licensed the CryEngine to Cloud Imperium for less than market rate because Cloud had promised that it would prominently display the CryEngine logo in the game. The suit alleges that Cloud Imperium founder Chris Roberts “publicly sought to minimize Crytek’s contribution to Star Citizen.”

All the drama is said to have happened before Cloud Imperium switched the game from the CryEngine to Amazon Lumberyard. Crytek also claims that it never received the list of bug fixes and optimizations that Cloud made to the CryEngine source code reports Gamespot.

Crytek also has an issue with the fact that the Squadron 42 single player portion of Star Citizen uses the CryEngine, but Cloud didnt have permission to use it in that game because Squadron 42 is a different game. Crytek is seeking damages of about $75,000 and a permanent injunction among other things.
