Keeping Your Earbuds Neat with the Earbud Yo-Yo

Earbud Yo-Yo

I just returned from a longer-than-normal road trip. Normally when I leave on the road, I take my usual array of electronics including laptop, phone, and PMP (personal media player), and my favorite headset. Ive been carrying the Vibe Duos as my headset of choice lately but lost the carrying case. To help clean up the clutter and wire tangle that I was getting with just rolling the headsets up and storing them in my pocket, I decided to try out an ingenious looking device from Covington Creations called the Earbud Yo-Yo.

Earbud Yo-Yo

The Earbud Yo-Yo was created by Covington Creations and launched at the 2009 Consumers Electronic Show to provide a simple solution to tangled earbuds. Covington Creations is a fairly new company, but it has already created a pretty good niche for itself as you can find their products in your nearest Frys Home Electronic Stores as well as some other popular consumer electronics shops. The Earbud Yo-Yo comes in a variety of colors and designs to suit your style and mood. There are two price points for the Yo-Yo depending on just how funky you want the design. The Yo-Yo that we had was a solid translucent dark blue that retails for $10.99. If you want a bit more couture, Convington-Creations have their designer Yo-Yos for $16.99.

Using the Earbud Yo-Yo is pretty simple. After unlocking the Earbud Yo-Yo, you lay your earbud cord on to the cord holder and replace the other half of the Yo-Yo. One half of the Yo-Yo has a notch where you can you just wind up your cord for the length that you want to use or for safe keeping.

Using the Earbud Yo-Yo really does clean up the clutter of tangled earbud cords. The Yo-Yo was really simple and easy to set up and makes storing your earbuds less of a pain. After a bit of practice, you can roll and unroll your earbud cord quite quickly for storage and use.

We did find that the performance for the Earbud Yo-Yo varied depending on the kind of cord your earbud has. For the standard (ie. Cheap) kind of earbuds that come standard with your iPod or other media player, the Yo-Yo works great. When we used other higher-end model of earphones such as the Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket or V-Moda Vibe IIs, however, the Yo-Yo didnt really do that great of a job. These higher end headsets have heavier grade cords which are slightly bigger than the cheap models. When you use the Yo-Yo with these headsets, they cant wrap as tightly or neatly as the cheaper, thinner models.

Legit Bottom Line:

For around $11, the Covington-Creations Earbud Yo-Yo is a very effective solution to the problem of cord tangles. If you are one that is constantly taking time out to untangle the wires of your earbud before you can enjoy your music, you really need to look at this product.
