Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 1500W PSU Review

A look inside

The cooling fan

A rebranded
Young Lin Tech 135mm fan is installed inside the Silent Pro M2 1500W unit.
Strangely, the DFS132512H is a 1700RPM with a sleeve bearing; Cooler Masters
graphs indicate that this fan could reach up to 2600RPM, which it surely (and
thankfully) cannot.

Inside the Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 1500W unit

Enhance is
the OEM behind most of Cooler Masters high end power supplies and this unit is
no exception. The Silent Pro M2 1500W is based on an upgraded design which
Enhance first implemented back in 2009. Curiously, the initial design was
80Plus Silver certified as well and performed quite well, so we cannot help but
wonder what the company improved.

The filtering stage

The
filtering stage starts hard at the back of the A/C receptacle, with two Y and
two X capacitors. Two more X capacitors and two large filtering coils can be
found on the main PCB, alongside surge suppressing metal-oxide varistors.
Beneath the massive heatsinks of the APFC transistors, the input bridge
rectifier is installed on its own dedicated heatsink.

Primary side

Not one,
not two but four primary capacitors are installed on the primary side of this
unit, next to a massive APFC coil. Each capacitor is rated for 270
F/420V, so the total capacitance is
actually not very large. The capacitors are supplied by Matsushita.

Secondary side

Most of the
changes from the previous design have been taking place on the secondary side
of the unit. Enhance replaced the two small transformers with a massive single
transformer handling the entirety of the load. The heatsinks have been replaced
by smaller but pure copper heatsinks and DC to DC conversion circuits are now
present. Electrolytic capacitors are supplied by Nippon Chemi-Con and Teapo,
both of which are highly reputable manufacturers.
